GEORGY, Metropolitan of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas

Metropolitan Georgy (Danilov) was born in the city of Zhlobin, in the Homiel region, the Republic of Belarus, on August 14, 1964. He was baptized in the same year at the Holy Trinity Temple in Zhlobin. He served in the Armed Forces from May, 1984 to June, 1986.

He entered the Moscow Theological Seminary in 1986. In November, 1988 he was accepted as a novice at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra in the city of Sergiev Posad in the Moscow region. On December 22, 1989, the commemoration day of the «Unexpected Joy» Icon of the Holy Theotokos, he was tonsured by Archimandrite Theognost, Father Superior of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, and took the name Georgy in honor of St. George the Victory-Bearer. In June, 1990 he graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary and entered the Moscow Theological Academy.

On November 9, 1990, the repose of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, Monk Georgy was ordained hierodeacon by Bishop Vikenty (Morar) of Bender, Vicar Bishop of the Kishinev diocese (today the archbishop of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye) during a Divine Liturgy at the Dormition Cathedral of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. On April 9, 1991, the commemoration day of the Iveron Icon of the Holy Theotokos, he was ordained hieromonk by His Holiness Patriarch Alexius II of Moscow and All Russia during a Divine Liturgy at St. Sergius Temple of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra.

Hieromonk Georgy was appointed steward at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra in January, 1993. In June, 1995 he graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy with a degree in Theology. The theme of his master’s thesis was «The Life and Ministry of Saint Tikhon of Moscow». Starting from August, 1995 he taught the Byzantine theology at the Moscow Theological Seminary. In August, 1999 Hieromonk Georgy was appointed director of the Patriarch’s Architecture and Restoration Center at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. On May 31, 2002 he was appointed steward of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra and the Moscow theological institutions.

He was awarded the Order of St. Sergius of Radonezh of the second degree by His Holiness Patriarch Alexius II of Moscow and All Russia in 2000.

Archimandrite Georgy, Steward of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, was determined to be ordained bishop of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese by the Russian Orthodox Church Holy Synod of Bishops on December 26, 2002. The consecration was held in Moscow. His Holiness Patriarch Alexius II of Moscow and All Russia presided over the consecration which took place during a Divine Liturgy at Christ the Savior Cathedral on February 2, 2003.

Bishop Georgy was awarded the Russian Federation State Prize in the field of Science and Technology for the development of a scientifically based technology for the restoration of historical monuments and its implementation in the restoration of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra by Decree No. 1154 of the Russian Federation President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin issued on September 9, 2004.

Bishop Georgy was consecrated archbishop by decree of His Holiness Patriarch Alexius II of Moscow and All Russia on February 24, 2006.

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia awarded the Order of Saint Seraphim of Sarov of the second degree to Archbishop Georgy on September 11, 2009.

The Russian Orthodox Church Holy Synod appointed His Eminence Archbishop Georgy Head of the newly formed Nizhny Novgorod metropolia, which includes the dioceses of Vyksa, Gorodets, Lyskovo and Nizhny Novgorod on March 15, 2012. 

During the divine liturgy of St. Basil the Great at Christ the Savior Cathedral on March 18, the third Sunday of Lent, which is of the Veneration of the Cross, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia consecrated Archbishop of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas Georgy as Metropolitan.
